Early Schools, Ludgershall

In 1783 the rector, John Selwyn was able to state that there were no schools in the parish. However by 1818 his daughter had founded a school using the interest on £1,000 stock. Traditionally this was supposed to have been left in the will of Sir William Meadowes and the interest amounted to £24 a year. However a later search could not find a will and it is possible that the Selwyn family funded the school themselves. The school was for 15 girls, clothing was provided once a year and Miss Selwyn seems to have run it on the lines of the Bluecoat and Greycoat schools. It was probably still running in 1831. Another school started c.1828 and had 40 children in 1831, while another school had been founded by 1846. In 1846/7 there were three schools in which 85 children were taught.
