The school was opened in 1940 on the boundary of Tidworth and Ludgershall parishes to take the older children (11+) from those communities. It was a secondary modern school and some children went to Andover Grammar School, Bishop Wordsworth School at Salisbury, or Marlborough Grammar School. In 1965 it was decided that the school should be for boys only and Ludgershall Castle School was opened in Short Street for the girls. The girls rejoined the boys in 1978 when Ludgershall Castle School became a junior school. Tidworth Down became a comprehensive and the name was changed to Castledown School, an amalgam of the names of the two schools. The school is on a large, pleasant semi-rural site and serves Tidworth, Ludgershall, the Collingbournes and local hamlets. About one third of the pupils are from service families. In 1998 there were 418 pupils aged between 11 and 16 years, while in 2002 the number was 370.
