In 1965 Tidworth Down Secondary School was changed to a boys only school. A new school for the girls had been built in Short Street and given the name Ludgershall Castle School. This school educated local girls, aged from 11 to 16, until 1978 when they rejoined the boys at Tidworth Down School, which became a comprehensive and was renamed Castledown School, an amalgam of the two school names. The girls' school became the new primary school for Ludgershall and was named Castle Primary School.
