By 1848 the vicar, Rev. Hawkins, had set up a school for boys and girls with Thomas Carter as master and Thomas King as assistant master. By 1855 David Timms, who also kept a stationery and book shop, was assistant master and Mrs Timms supervised the girls until 1867 when Sarah Manderson took over. The school was not large enough to educate all of the village children and it was replaced by the Board School for boys and infants in 1875. The girls went to the School for Girls.
