Summary

We will use the grant from Arts Council England we applied for (currently waiting for the decision) to devise & tour a 30 minute outdoor Covid safe show combining contact crystal juggling, dance, electric unicycling & acoustic/electronic music in Italian & English. Parading on the street, with a live musician & myself riding an electric unicycle getting the attention of people & leading them to a performance area: a local space transformed by our show & witnessed by the local community. With the partnership of Knowle West Media Centre and East Side Community Trust, we'll deliver the show to 3 underprivileged neighbourhoods with lower artistic engagement in Bristol, targeting an audience described as Kaleidoscope Creativity by the Audience Agency. We will then further hone the show using a week in the space provided by the program "Engine Room" (Wiltshire Creative) to then deliver another 3 shows in the Trowbridge area with the partnership of Trowbridge Town Hall Arts.

Community Benefits

This first phase of our project, ‘Living in Bubbles’ which has been created by myself and a musician, Luca Macchi (we are both based in Bristol), will benefit under-privileged communities in Trowbridge and Bristol. Audiences will experience high quality, professionally delivered, live, Covid safe, circus and music based street-theatre entertainment, brought directly to their own neighbourhoods, so they will feel safe to attend, even if some people are cautious about venturing out into the wider world due to Covid-19 concerns to see entertainment. Those unable to move from home (such as older or disabled people) can enjoy the parade from their doorstep, and the parade and live music will catch the interest of local audiences who may not usually engage with the arts. The show will also be unticketed removing financial barriers often felt by those with low income in the areas we are targeting. They will have the option to donate via a QR code if they would like to/are able to afford to. As we will take the show to people’s own neighbourhoods this will also decrease the environmental impact of the show as the audiences won’t need to travel alongside our pledge to use either electric and hybrid cars or public transport where possible. We will also be creating and releasing four short social media video documenting highlights from our creation process and designed to maximise their social media impact, which will be shared via our own social media streams and on those of the communities we are engaging with to help advertise our upcoming performances and to give online users circus and music content to enjoy and be inspired by. Audiences benefiting from our performances will be: Residents of 6 underprivileged neighbourhoods in Bristol & Trowbridge described as Kaleidoscope Creativity by the Audience Agency outlined by: low cultural engagement; mix of ages; low income; culturally diverse backgrounds. Professional & public audiences of our Work-In-Progress showings in: Bristol: The Island and Circomedia (including alumni & students); Milan: Cascina Torchiera (a community organised and run space); Wales: Organised Kaos Youth Circus. Local people & communities connected to & who benefit from: Trowbridge Town Hall Arts; Knowle West Media Centre; East Side Community Trust. Experience Seekers (Audience Agency) aged 20 to 35 active on social media, interested in community arts, engaged via targeted social media advertising as proven by statistics of previously released videos, in my previous Arts Council England funded project. Residents of targeted areas who are: interested in live music & circus; at home or with no easy access to the arts; unable to travel due to Covid, physical disability, economic & language barriers; interested in wider cultural appeal. The show will be created in July and August 2021 across Wales, England and Italy (Truan is welsh and Luca is italian) and the performances will be delivered in August and September in 2021 in Trowbridge and Bristol. We will monitor the outcome of our project by: Having ongoing evaluations with our producer, Ryan Murphy of ‘Tit for Tat’ (an established outdoor circus-theatre company) after each residency, work-in-progress showing & video creation session; Conducting & recording Q&A feedback after these work-in-progress showings to inform creation; Gauging & recording how many audience members in our chosen demographics engage with our performances; from their doorsteps during our parade & during the static show; Inviting & recording feedback from collaborating organisations, mentors & specialists; Assessing our videos via Facebook & Instagram analytics; monitoring interactions & clicks on links to social media pages or websites.
