Calne Fairtrade Town Promotion Event at The Pocket Park 14th August 2021

Organisation

Calne Community Area Fairtrade Group

Grant Type

Older and Vulnerable Adults Funding

Summary

The Project consists of two parts: 1. Renewal of Fairtrade Town Campaign Banners for 2021 bearing new artwork from Kingsbury Green Academy's Year 8 Fairtrade Day (scheduled for 16th July). 2. A Fairtrade event to replace the annual and nationwide Fairtrade Fortnight Event normally scheduled each March and normally held in the Library or Town Hall. Due to Covid-19 we were unable to mount this key event to showcase Fairtrade and Calne as a Fairtrade Town. This Saturday 14th August event will be staged in the open air in Calne Pocket Park, with stalls and the well known Clare's Circus especially for children attending. We expect to see Fairtrade stalls from Tesco, Sainsbury, Traidcraft, Zaytoun FT, Sustainable Calne and others.

Community Benefits

This project is part of an ongoing campaign to educate about and improve Fairtrade awareness and sales Calne. Calne was awarded Fairtrade Town Status in Feb 2019, after some years of campaigning. Once awarded a town has to make efforts to improve on its Fairtrade credentials year on year and has to show this to be awarded a renewal of its status. This event is part of this ongoing campaign. The Town Council awarded us funding to procure Fairtrade Town signs for each end of the town - we are currently awaiting delivery of these to be erected. In terms of benefit Fairtrade directly benefits those overseas producers who through it are able to earn a fair wage and funds to benefit their communities. In terms of local benefit - a more compassionate and caring society. Monitoring is both short and long term. Short term we count a good turn out and feedback from stall holders about interest shown in their Fairtrade products - in the medium to long term the growth of outlets and organisations including churches who exhibit Fairtrade products and credentials. We main a database of Fairtrade outlets and activity in the town which forms part of our Fairtrade Town renewal data credibility every two years.
