Garrison Church of St. Michael, Tidworth

This Anglican church was designed by Douglas Hoyland of London but built by a local builder, C. Grace and Sons of Ludgershall. The foundation stone was laid in 1911 and the church was built in 12 months. It is built of buff coloured hollow terractta blocks and is of impressive size in the centre of the garrison. There is a bell tower with spire over the crossing of the transepts. Much of the cost was raised by public donations and furnishings were presented by various regiments. When built it could seat 1,000 people but this was reduced to 800 later in the 20th century when alterations and improvements, including the enlargement of the sanctuary, reduced the seating. From 1985 services have been on an inter-denominational basis.
