Historical maps

The Know Your Place West of England website is for anyone interested in the local history of Wiltshire (as well as Bristol, Gloucestershire, South Gloucestershire, B&NES, Devon and Somerset). It provides access to historic maps and interactive layers of historic data, archival collections and community input. This enables you to compare and contrast contemporary OS maps with historic maps, such as tithe maps, useful when studying the development of areas and communities. The site also pinpoints (geotags) heritage collections of all shapes and sizes to their relevant locations on the maps – these are known as information layers.

Here is a step-by-step guide to Know Your Place for anyone wanting to use the site but not sure how to get the best from it.

You can follow Know Your Place Wiltshire on their Facebook page.
