Chris Wildridge - 'In verse 1 the text gives 'To commence the hard contest' once which is followed by a series of dashes. Palmer interprets this as a double repetition to retain the scansion. Palmer also alters the order of verses 2 and 3, probably to improve the structure of the song.'
