Where the cannons loudly roar
Singer
Preston, William
Notes
Note 1

Williams, Alfred: Ms / WGS: 'The Battle of Salamanca which is mentioned in this song, was fought July 22nd 1812, between Wellington and the French troops under Marmont and resulted in a victory for the English after huge losses on each side. The age of the piece may therefore be conjectured. The last line but one of the song is rather hazy. For widows I have heard villas, but I do not think either is right. Obtained of William Preston, Grafton, near Clanfield.'

Note 2

This appears on the LP: Portway Pedlars [Len and Barbara Berry]: In the greenwood. Greenwich Village, GVR 229, 1984. Track 5. The tune used is from Mr Hilton of Norfolk. The record sleeve also says that the tune was collected by Percy Grainger from W Clark, Barrow on Humber.
