Verse 1
It's of a young sailor now I write,
Who on the seas took great delight,
The female sex for to beguile,
At length by him two was with child.
Verse 2
He promised to be true to both,
And bound himself in a sacred oath,
To marry them, if he had life,
And one of them did make his wife.
Verse 3
The other, she being left alone,
Crying, 'Thou deceitful one,
To me you have done a wicked thing,
Which public shame on me will bring.'
Verse 4
Unto a silent wood she went,
Her private shame for to prevent,
And quickly finished the strife,
And cut the tender thread of life.
Verse 5
Straightway two huntsmen cut her down,
And in her breast a note was found,
The note was written out in large:
'To bury me not I do you charge,
Verse 6
But on the ground here let me lie,
That everyone who passes by,
May by me account to take,
And see what comes e'er 'tis too late.
Verse 7
Though he be false I will be just,
He on the earth shall take no rest.'
Then, as she said, she plagued him,
That at length to sea did go.
Verse 8
But when he as on the mainmast high,
A little boat he did espy,
For come to end the wicked thing,
Which made him tremble in every limb.
Verse 9
The to the Captain he disclose,
X
'Here is a spirit will fetch me hence,
I pray you stand in my defence.'
Verse 10
'But if you stand in his defence,
A mighty storm I will send hence,
Which will make both you and your men to weep,
And leave you sleeping in the deep.'
Verse 11
Then to preserve both ship and men,
Into the boat they forced him then,
The boat sunk in a flame of fire,
Which made the sailors all admire.
Verse 12
Come all ye that do love too long,
Be watchful of my mournful song,
Be true and faithful in your mind,
And not delude poor womankind.
