Verse 1
Twas of a brisk young butcher as I've heard many say,
He started up to London town all on a certain day;
Said he, 'A frolic I will have my fortune for to try,
I'll go down into Leicestershire some cattle for to buy.'
Verse 2
When he arove in Leicestershire, he stopped at the Inn,
He called for liquors of the best his business to begin;
He called for liquors of the best, and being a roving blade,
He presently did fix his eye upon the chambermaid.
Verse 3
When the day was over the night being coming on,
[Line 2 missing]
He called for his supper his reckoning left upaid,
Said he, 'This night I'll put a trick upon the chambermaid.'
Verse 4
When she took the candle to light him up to bed,
When he come into the room, these words to her he said:
'One sovereign I will give to thee for to enjoy thy charms.'
So all that night the fair maid slept all in the butcher's arms.
Verse 5
He got up in the morning and prepared to go away,
The landlady said, 'No, Sir, your reckoning you did not pay.'
'O no,' the butcher he replied, 'O do not think it strange.
One sovereign I gave to your chambermaid but did not get the change.'
Verse 6
The landlady then called the maid and charged her much the same,
One sovereign she did lay down, fearing to get the blame:
The butcher he went home well pleased with what was past,
And soon the buxom chambermaid got thick about the waist.
Verse 7
Just in twelve months after he came to town again,
And, just as he had before, he stopped at the Inn.
And soon the buxom chambermaid she chanced for him to spy,
She brought the babe just three months old, and placed it on his knee.
Verse 8
The butcher sit like one amazed, and at the child did stare,
And, when the joke was found out, how he did stamp and swear:
The company laughed, the maid did joke, and fled in bliss around,
And soon the tidings of the same sped all through Leicester town.
Verse 9
The butcher was to justice brought, which happened to be near,
One hundred pound he did pay down, before he could get clear:

Verse 10
So all you brisk young butchers a warning take from me,
And look whatever your money is before you money pay:
Or else maybe your money will give you a cause to pauge,
Or if you sport with a dandy lass be sure you get your change.
