George B Gardiner, Charles Shears, 85, Salisbury Union, workhouse, August, 1909.
Ralph Vaughan Williams, Sung by Mr Seers or Shears of Winterslow, Wiltshire, now in Salisbury Union, Sept 1st, 1904.
Jean Morrison, Charles Shears, 1825 - 1914. was born at Winterslow, Wiltshire, of a family of woodsmen and labourers. The most celebrated of the family was Lydia Shears, a reputed witch who could turn herself into a hare. She was eventually shot and killed with a silver bullet.
There is some difficulty surrounding which Charles Shears was collected by Gardiner and Vaughan-Williams. According to the 1911 Census the person resident in Salisbury Union was born in Grateley, Hampshire, in 1826. The person referred to by Jean Morrison may have been died between 1881 and 1891 as his wife Elizabeth is listed as a widow in 1891 [CDW]
