DEATH OF MR ALFRED SPIERS

On Saturday morning, the 9th inst., Mr Alfred Spiers died at The Swan, Southrop, the home of his daughter and son-in-law Mr and Mrs George Newman, with whom he had resided for the last 19 years. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon at the parish church, Lechlade . . . The burial took place in the same grave as his wife, who died 19 years ago.

Details of mourners and floral tributes

Mr Spiers was a native of Defford, Worcestershire, and came to this town about 52 years ago as agent for the G.W.R. He lived for a short time in St Johns Street, then in the Fairford Road for 10 years. He then became licensee of the Swan for five years, and later of the Crown for 18 years, retiring on the death of his wife and daughter, Edith, in 1909. In politics he was a staunch Conservative, and by his occupation and urbanity he was well-known by everyone in the town. He leaves a family of two sons, two daughters, and a step-daughter to mourn his loss.

My particular thanks to Dr. C J Bearman who researched a number of Gloucestershire singers as part of the Singing Landscape Project, 2008 - 2010 with whose kind permission this obituary is reproduced.
