Note 1
Alfred Williams: Ms: ‘A pretty song, and one that is of great age. It is of irregular composition; perhaps some [part – deleted] verse of it has been lost. I have heard parts of it in several quarters of the Thames valley. Obtained of David Sawyer, formerly of Ogbourne, Wiltshire.
Alfred Williams: FSUT: Sung by David Sawyer at farm festivals on the Wiltshire Downs.’
Note 2
The usual citation for this song is: WSHC: 2598/36 Packet 4 - Wiltshire: Williams, A: MS collection No Wt 475. The above text is taken from the original which is the citation given above.
Note 3
There appear to be two manuscript copies of this song. One, the original of which is in the about citation has a longer head note. The second has the shorter head note which appears in FSUT and is located in WSHC 2598 Packet 4 [as noted above]. The script in the former is less clear than the latter. I would suggest that Williams may have mislaid the original fair copy and written another, only to come across the earlier copy later.
