Jean Morrison - 'This is a more complete version of Wilton Fair. It probably dated in this form from the 1850's, when the crinoline came into fashion and was much copied by country folk. However, not only was it awkwardly wide, it was also rather springy and in a high wind, or when country dancing, was apt to reveal too much! Servant girls put hoops of wood or cane under their skirts. Punch of the period has pictures ridiculing them. Carotty Kate's obviously were makeshifts that had come adrift. [Wiltshire Folk Song].'
