Note 1
Alfred Williams - 'This was commonly heard at Bampton and Buckland, Berkshire. The copy I obtained of Henry Radband, Bampton, Oxfordshire.'
Note 2
The original manuscript does not contain this note. It just mentions Mr Radbad, Bampton. The proof folder contains another manuscript rather than the usual printed copy. This contains the text of Note 1.
Verse 1, lines 5 - 7 originally read:
He envied not the rich nor the great,
Nor the proudest he ever saw
While he had home brewed, brown bread
Chorus line 3 originally read:
While he had home brewed, brown bread,
Verse 3, lines 1 and 2 originally read:
Neither ragged nor torn he turned from the door
But give him a crust of bread
Verse 3, lines 5 and 6 in the proof folder read:
Though rich I be it might happen to me,
Misfortune might on me fall
Which is the text that appears in Folk songs of the Upper Thames
Verse 4, line 6 has the alternative 'gaul' in brackets.
There is another, probably earlier version of the text which contains many of the line versions noted above. Verses 2 and 3 are fragmentary in this manuscript with pencilled notes linked the separated parts.
