No doubt such an incident actually happened once upon a time: the majority of the folk pieces are founded upon facts, historical and otherwise, and we can well believe that several wags really behaved as the song declares, and forced poor Jarvis to ascend the gibbet and remain there till he was rescued by the bold brick maker the next morning. Obtained of Wassail Harvey, of Cricklade.'
