Note 1
Williams, Alfred: Ms / WGS: 'Evidently of Irish origin. I am not sure whether the English songs were popular in the 'Emerald Isle', though doubtless they were so: many of the Irish were certainly highly acceptable to the villages on this side of St George's Channel. Obtained of David Sawyer, Ogbourne and Bishopstone.'
Note 2
This is the only reference by Williams to David Sawyer living anywhere other than Ogbourne. He was living in Bishopstone, his wife Ellen's birthplace, a parish near Swindon in 1871.
