Williams, Alfred: Ms / WGS: 'A simple, yet sweet and pleasing song, with genuine human feeling expressed within its lines. It is probably of Yorkshire origin, though it was well loved in our Thames vale. Obtained, except the fifth verse, of Daniel Morgan, Braydon, Wiltshire. The missing stanza was supplied by James Harris, Southleigh, near Witney, Oxfordshire.'

This is one of the few occasions when we have a clear insight into the way Williams merged songs from different sources, although we cannot tell whether Morgan's and Harris' text otherwise were the same.
