Verse 1
As William and Mary stood by the seashore,
Their last fond farewell to take -
'Should you never return,' little Mary she cried,
'My poor heart it surely will break;
For I love you so dear, so true and sincere,
And no other, I swear, beside,
If in riches I rolled, and was covered in gold,
You should make little Mary your bride.'
Verse 2
When three years were past without news, at last,
As Mary stood at her cottage door,
An old beggar came by with a patch on his eye,
Quite lame and did pity implore -
'Your charity bestow, and your fortune I'll tell.'
Says he, 'And this news beside -
The lad that you mourn will never return
To make little Mary his bride.'
Verse 3
'If he lives, Heaven knows the joys that I feel!
Still, for his misfortune I'll mourn.
But he's welcome to me in his poverty,
If his blue jacket's ragged and torn.
For I love him so dear, so true and sincere,
And no other, I swear, beside,
If in riches I rolled and were covered with gold,
He should make little Mary his bride.'
Verse 4
Then the patch from his eye this old beggar threw by,
His old coat and crutches beside,
His jacket so blue and cheeks like a rose,
It was William stood by Mary's side -
'Forgive me, my dear maid,' said he,
'I did it your love for to try;
Now to church we'll away by the break of the day,
And I'll make little Mary my bride.'
