Song Lyrics
Verse 1

Come all young men and maidens, attend unto my rhyme,
Tis of a comely damsel was scarcely in her prime,
She beat the blushing roses, admired by all around,
Was comely young Caroline of Edinburgh Town.

Verse 2

Young Henry was a highland lad and a-courting to her came,
And when her parents came to know they did not like the same;
Says he - 'We'll go to London, love, and marry there with speed,
For there, my lovely Caroline, is happiness indeed.'

Verse 3

Then Caroline rose up to go, all early in the morn,
With gold, likewise with jewels, she did herself adorn;
Enticed by young Henry she put on her best gown,
And away went young Caroline of Edinburgh Town.

Verse 4

O'er hills and lofty mountains together they did roam,
In time arrived at London and bitter was their home;
She aid - 'My dearest Henry, you must not on me frown,
Or you'll break the heart of Caroline of Edinburgh Town.

Verse 5

They had not been in London not passed half a year,
When hard hearted Henry he proved to her severe;
Said Henry - 'I will go to sea, your friends did on me frown.
Now beg your way without delay to Edinburgh Town.'

Verse 6

Then many a day she passed away in sorrow and despair,
Her cheeks once like the roses were now like the lilies fair;
She said - 'Where is my Henry?' and she did swoon,
Crying - 'Sad the day I ran away from Edinburgh Town.'

Verse 7

Oppressed with grief without relief this damsel she did go,
Into a wood to eat such food as on the bushes grow,
Some strangers they did pity her, and some did on her frown,
And some did say - 'What made you stray from Edinburgh Town?'

Verse 8

Beneath that old oak tree this maid sat down to cry,
A-watching of the gallant ships as they went sailing by;
She gave three shrieks for Henry, and threw her body down,
And away floated Caroline of Edinburgh Town.

Verse 9

A note, likewise her bonnet, she left upon the shore,
And in that note a lock of hair with words - 'I am no more.'
But fast asleep within the deep with fishes watching round,
For that comely young Caroline of Edinburgh Town.

Verse 10

Come, all you laden parents, you never part true love,
For you're sure to see in some degree their ruin it will prove;
Also, young men and maidens, never on your lovers frown,
Think on the fate of Caroline of Edinburgh Town.
