Song Lyrics
Verse 1

There was a cockney, as I've heard said,
Went down in the country to choose him a maid,
And into his pocket he put a handful of gold,
And a sword at his side to make him look bold.

Verse 2

He rode till he came to fair Leicester town,
And there he put up at the sign of the Crown;
A beautiful maiden appeared in his sight,
Which caused him to tarry and stay there that night.

Verse 3

He said - 'Fair damsel, if you will be mine,
All this gold and silver I have shall be thine.'
The ploughman stood by and heard cockney say so,
'Odzooks!' said the ploughman, 'I know what I know.

Verse 4

This beautiful damsel she ought to be mine,
But if thou can'st gain her then she shall be thine,
For we'll go to the field to fight for the prize,
And we'll never give over till one of us dies.'

Verse 5

So they fought for an hour, and hot was the fray,
Before they could tell which would gain the day;
T last the young ploughman gave cockney a fall,
Saying - 'Now Mr Cockney your life pays for all.

Verse 6

Now it never shall be said, while we're on the green grass,
That a ploughboy's afraid to fight for his lass,
And it never shall be said, till the very last pinch,
That a ploughboy's afraid to fight for his wench.'
