Verse 1
The sun was just rising one fine May morning,
The birds from the bushes so sweetly did sing,
When the lads and the lasses were merrily moving
To yonder large village their work to begin;
Then I spied a damsel much brighter than Venus,
Her cheeks were like roses, none could excel,
Her skin like the lily that grows in yon valley,
This blooming young goddess, the factory girl.
Verse 2
I stepped up to her, this beautiful creature,
She cast upon me a proud look of disdain -
'Stand back, sir,' she cried, 'and do not insult me,
Though poor I am, poverty's never a stain.'
I said - 'Do not scorn me, I never will harm theee,
But one favour grant me, Pray! where do you dwell?'
With tears she replied and was going to leave me -
'I am but a hard working factory girl.'
Verse 3
I stood all amazed while on her I gazed,
Such modest behaviour before ne'er did I see,
I said - 'My sweet charmer, my soul's great alarmer,
Come tell me in earnest, will you marry me?'
She said - 'Sir, temptations are used in all nations,
Go, marry a lady and you will do well,
For I'm a poor orphan with no friends or relations,
And I am but a hard working factory girl.'
Verse 4
I stood in a flutter, knew not what was the matter,
For Cupid so silly my heart had trepanned -
'Dear maid,' then I cried, 'if you'll not be my bride,
I will wander for ever in some foreign land.
What pleasure's in treasure when true love is wanting?
Your beauty upon me has now cast a spell,
I will marry you speedy and make you a lady,
If you will be mine, my dear factory girl.'
Verse 5
She gave her consent and the licence was purchased,
The bells they did merrily echo and ring,
To church then they went and as they were returning,
The bridesmen and maidens so sweetly did sing.
This lovely young couple live happy together,
She blesses the hour she first saw her swain;
The factory girl she is made a rich lady,
And married to a squire of honour and fame.
