Verse 1
As a pretty young maid in the garden was walking
A brisk young sailor she chanced to see;
He stepped up to her to ask her faour,
Saying - 'Pretty maid, can you fancy me?'
Verse 2
'I have a sweetheart of my own, sir,
And seven long years he's been at sea,
And seven more I will wait for him,
And he'll return again to me.'
Verse 3
'Seven years will make an alteration,
I'm sure he's either dead or drowned;'
'If he's alive I'll love him dearly,
And if he's dead for him I'll mourn.'
Verse 4
He drew his hand out of his bosom,
His fingers were both long and small,
Saying - 'here's the ring we broke between us:'
Soon as she saw she down did fall.
Verse 5
He took her up and clasped her to him,
And gave her kisses by two or three,
Saying - 'I am thy true and simple sailor,
And I'm just returned to marry thee.'
