Verse 1
One night as Polly Oliver lay musing on her bed,
The thoughts of her lover came into her head -
'Neither father nor mother shall make me false prove.
I'll list for a soldier and follow my true love.'
Verse 2
Twas early the next morning Polly Oliver she arose,
She dressed herself up in a man's suit of clothes;
Coat, waistcoat, and breeches, and a sword by her side -
Her father's Black Bess like a Dragoon she did ride.
Verse 3
He rode and she drove till she came to far London town,
Where she drank and put up at the sign of the Crown;
The first that came down came down from above,
And the next that came down was Polly Oliver's true love.
Verse 4
'Good evening! Good evening! Kind Captain,' said she,
'Here's a letter from your own true love, Polly Oliver, to thee.'
He opened the letter and a guinea he found -
'That's for you and your country men to drink her health round.'
Verse 5
Polly Oliver being drowsy, she hung down her head,
She asked for a candle to light her to bed -
'Oh, yes!' replied the Captain, 'I've a bed at my ease,
And you can lie by me, country man, if you plase.'
Verse 6
'To lie by a Captain is a dangerous thing,
I'm a new ;listed soldier and bound to serve the King;
I'm bound to serve the King, by sea or by land,
It's early tomorrow morning I'll be at your command.'
Verse 7
Twas early the next morning Polly Oliver she arose,
She dressed herself up in her own suit of clothes;
Downstairs she came - it was a room from above -
Saying - 'I am Polly Oliver, your own loyal true love.'
Verse 8
The Captain being surprised, he laughed at the fun,
They went and got married and all things were done:
Says the Captain to Polly Oliver - 'The fault it was mine,
I hope to please you better love, for now is our time.'
