Verse 1
As a soldier and a sailor were walking one day,
Said the soldier to the sailor - 'I am going to pray,
For you know, brother sailor, I pray now and then
And whatever I should pray for you must answer 'Amen''
Verse 2
Now they walked and they talked till they came to a tree,
Said the soldier to the sailor - 'This my pulpit shall be,
For you know, brother sailor, I pray now and then
And whatever I should pray for you must answer 'Amen''
Verse 3
Now the first thing he prayed for it was for strong beer
That they might have enough, enough and to spare -
'But where we have one quart we ought to have ten,
We should never want for strong beer, 'cried the sailor 'Amen!'
Verse 4
Now the next thing he prayed for it was for good beef,
That they might have plenty and eat with relief -
'But where we have one pound we ought to have ten,
We should never want for good beef, 'cried the sailor 'Amen!'
Verse 5
Now the next thing he prayed for it was for the king,
That he may have long life and long may he reign -
'But where he has one man I wish he had ten,
We should never want for an army, 'cried the sailor 'Amen!'
