Verse 1
Now the winter is come with it's cold, chilly breath,
And the leaves they do fall from the trees,
All nature seems touched by the finger of Death,
And the brooks are beginning to freeze;
Now the wanton young lads in the river do slide,
And Flora attends us no more.
Whilst in health we enjoy everything that is good,
That's the time to remember the poor.
Verse 2
Now the seas shall enlarge and the waters increase,
And the river revengefully grow,
The ships from their stations obtain their release,
While in danger the travellers go;
The meadows are hid by its proud swelling flood,
And the bridges are useful no more,
Whilst in health we enjoy everything that is good,
That's the time to remember the poor.
Verse 3
The keen, cutting wind from the north does attend
And blustering goes o'er the ground,
The cold, feathery snow does in plenty descend
And whitens the prospect around;
The hills and the dales are all covered with white,
And the rivers are congealed to the shore,
Whilst the bright twinkling stars proclaim the cold night
That's the time to remember the poor.
Verse 4
As the poor harmless hare may be traced to the wood
By her footsteps all printed in snow,
The lips and the fingers are started with blood
While the sportsmen a-cock-shooting go
There's the little robin red breast approaches your cot
And icicles hang o'er the door
Whilst in health we enjoy everything that is good,
That's the time to remember the poor.
Verse 5
Now the time it will come when our Saviour's on earth,
All the world shall agree with one voice,
All nations unite to salute the blest morn,
And the ends of the earth shall rejoice:
Grim Death being deprived of its cold, chilly sting,
The grave it shall triumph no more,
Arch angels and men Alleluia shall sing
Then the rich will remember the poor.
