Song Lyrics
Verse 1

'Twas of a comely young lady fair,
Was walking out to take the air;
She met a sailor all by the way,
I paid attention to hear what they did say.

Verse 2

Said William - 'Lady, why rove alone,
As the night is come and the day's near gone?'
She said, while tears from her eyes did roll,
'It's my dark eyed sailor that has proved my downfall.'

Verse 3

It's seven long years since he left this land,
He took the gold rings from off my hand,
And broke the token. One part's with me,
While the other's at the bottom of the sea.'

Verse 4

Said William, 'Drive him from your mind,
Some other sailor as good you'll find.
Love turns aside and soon cold will grow,
Like a winter's morning with frost and snow.'

Verse 5

These words did Phoebe's heart inflame,
She said - 'On me you shall play no game.'
She drew a dagger and then did cry,
'For my dark eyed sailor a maid I'll die.

Verse 6

His coal black eyes and his curly hair,
And his pleasing tongue did my heart ensnare.
Gentle he was and not cunning like you,
To advise me to slight the jacket blue.

Verse 7

But still,' said Phoebe, 'I'll not disclaim,
Some tarry sailor is as good as the same.
To drink his health here's a piece of coin,
But the dark eyed sailor still claims this heart of mine.'

Verse 8

Then half the ring did young William show,
She seemed distracted with grief and woe.
'Oh, welcome, William! I've lands and gold,
For my dark eyed sailor so true and bold.'

Verse 9

Then is a cottage down by the sea,
They joined in wedlock and did well agree.
All maids be true when your love's away,
For a cloudy morn oft brings a pleasant day.
