Verse 1
'Twas near Fleet Street, it was reported,
A fair young maiden there did dwell;
And by some servant man she was courted,
Who loved her exceeding well.
Verse 2
'Twas near that place there was some dancing,
When she unto the ball did go;
And this young man soon followed after,
All for to prove her overthrow.
Verse 3
He saw her dancing with some other,
Then he proved jealous in his mind;
And, to destroy his own true lover,
He gave her poison in a glass of wine.
Verse 4
She drank the poison, never thinking,
'Pray take me home, my dear,' said she -
'The glass of wine that you have given me,
Makes me as ill as ill can be.'
Verse 5
He said - 'My dear, I've drunk another,
I am as ill as ill as thee;
Now in each other's arms we'll die together - '
So all young men never jealous be.
