Verse 1
As I was walking one morning in May,
To see the fields decked in glorious array,
And as I was walking I passed by the grove,
I heard a young shepherd lamenting for the loss of his love.
Verse 2
I met with fair Flora and to her did say -
'To make us both happy it wants but one day.'
Said the fair one to the fond one - 'That never can come.
Beside, my young shepherd, we are both too young.
Verse 3
To marry so early I don't think it is fit,
For years will increase both our substance and wit.'
'Will you go to service and leave me to cry?'
'Oh yes my young shepherd; I'll tell you for why.'
Verse 4
In a little time after to service she went,
To wait on a lady it was her intent;
To wait on a lady, on a rich lady gay,
That clothed young Flora in costly array.
Verse 5
I wrote her a letter, and to her I sent,
It was three or four lines just to know her intent,;
She wrote that she lived such a contented life,
And never did intend being a young shepherd's wife.
Verse 6
My ewes and my lambs I will bid them adieu,
My sheep crook and my black dog I'll leave unto you;
My sheep and my crook I will leave all behind,
Since Flora, fair Flora, has changed her mind.
