Verse 1
There was an old miser in London did dwell,
He had but one daughter, a most beautiful girl,
And when this old miser was out of the way,
She was always a-courting, by night and by day.
Verse 2
And when this old miser he heard of the news,
Straightway to the captain he immediately goes -
'O honoured bold captain! Good news I've to tell,
I've got a jolly transport unto you I'll sell.'
Verse 3
'What do you want for him?' the captain said he,
'I want nothing for him but to send him to sea.
I'll send him a-sailing right over the Main,
Where he shall never come to England to courting again.'
Verse 4
Soon as this fair lady she heard of this news,
Straightway to the captain she immediately goes -
'O honoured bold captain! Bad news I'm to tell,
You've got my jolly sailor as a transport to sell.'
Verse 5
Then out of her pocket she pulled handfuls of gold,
Down on the main deck she immediately them told -
'O honoured bold captain! All this I'll give to you,
For my jolly young sailor, my right and my due.'
Verse 6
'O it's honoured fair lady! That never can be,
He was sold as a transport the other day to me.
I will send him a-sailing right over the Main,
Where he'll never come to England to court you again.'
Verse 7
'O bad luck to my father, wherever he may be,
For I think in my own heart he has quite ruined me,
I'll away to my cottage and lay myself down,
And all this night long for my true love I'll mourn.'
