Verse 1
A nobleman lived in a city,
Whose daughter to market would go,
Thinking that nothing could harm her,
As she passed late to and fro.
Verse 2
Till a gentleman thief overtook her,
And the pistol he held to her breast,
Saying - 'Your money and clothes you surrender,
Or else you shall die, I protest.'
Verse 3
And then he stripped her stark naked,
And gave her the bridle to hold,
While she stood shivering and shaking,
Just ready to die with the cold.
Verse 4
Then from stirrup to saddle she mounted,
Saying - 'You are a hard hearted man,
And since that my coin you've accounted,
You follow me now, if you can.'
Verse 5
The highwayman rose in a passion,
And unto her did call aloud -
'O beautiful Nancy! Stop, Nancy!
Your money and clothes are your own.'
Verse 6
'My money and clothes I don't value,
You can keep it all, if you please.'
He ran but he could not get to her,
For his boots they so hampered his knees.
