Note 1
Williams, Alfred: Ms / WGS: 'This song I first encountered at Longworth, Berkshire, some few years ago, where it was sung by an old man named Polebrook. After many enquiries I at length obtained the copy, part from the late Wassail Harvey of Cricklade and part from Mr Frank Cook, Burford, Oxfordshire.'
Note 2
In WGS there is an additional verse between Verses 3 and 4 above:
Verse 4
'O yes, kind sir. Give me hold of your hand,
For you have got riches, both houses and land,
Beside your pretty fair maid, which I'll put all aside,
For it is this little gipsy lass that is to be your bride.
Note 3
In Verse 5, Line 3 the original text was
But now my song is ended, I hope 'twill please you well,
