Verse 1
O once I was a gipsy lass, but now a squire's bride,
I have servants to wait on me, and in my carriage ride;
I left my friends and parents, likewise my sisters three,
And ran and met the squire beneath the greenwood tree.
Verse 2
My father he was the king of the gipsies, you must know,
My mother she learnt me some cant words also;
With my pack on my back, and they all wish me well,
I went up to London some fortunes there to tell.
Verse 3
As I was a-walking through fair London street,
This wealthy young squire I chanced all for to meet;
He viewed my brown face and he liked it so well,
He said, 'My little gipsy girl, my fortune you shall tell.'
Verse 4
He took me to a house, it was a palace I am sure,
Where ladies were waiting to open the door;
They were ladies of honour and of every degree,
But none for to equal my pretty Betsee.
Verse 5
Now adieu to each meadow and to each shady grove!
No more shall my gipsy girl from her home rove;
But now my song is ended, I hope it will please you well,
And when I come this way again your fortune I will tell.
